In Memory

Elizabeth Ann Shelton

Ann was born July 8, 1959, in Staunton, VA to Joe Martin and Janeta (Nichols) McGee.When she was 12, her father took a new job promotion with Lowe’s Hardware Stores and moved the family to Pensacola, FL. Ann graduated from Woodham High School of Pensacola in 1977 and attended Troy State University in Troy AL. Ann later obtained her Associate’s Science Degree from Bee County College in Beeville, TX.

Ann met her husband Michael in Pensacola while he was a Navy flight student. Through friends at her church where they both attended, she had given her phone number to him, but he didn’t call for several months. One night when he was on duty and bored with nothing else to do, he called her. They talked for over two hours!! They were both busy (her in college, he with Navy flight school). Finally came the first date – with the couple that had been playing match-maker, they did a double-date by Michael taking her flying in a Cessna 172. Michael later proposed to her in December 1978, just before getting his Naval Aviator wings. They were married in Pensacola in July 1979, and moved to San Diego where Michael was stationed as an F-14 pilot. They have two children and four grandchildren. As a family, they moved to many new locations as her husband was transferred to new duty stations. He retired from the Navy in 1993. Their son and daughter are married and have two children each.

After living in northern Virginia for almost 30 years, Ann and her husband moved to Athens, AL to be closer to family and live in a more relaxed area. They celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on July 7th, 2023. They loved to travel.

Ann always had family as her first priority. Philippians 2:3 and 4 would have been two of her theme verses: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” That was her. She was crazy about kids and especially her three granddaughters and grandson. She earlier retired as a teacher aide in a variety of elementary school settings. She particularly flourished in working with learning-challenged kids.

Ann, age 64, passed away on August 3, 2023. She was at home surrounded by family. She is lovingly survived by her husband and son Michael II (wife Noelle), daughter Heather Anderson (husband Matt), granddaughter Lily Shelton, grandson Joseph Michael Shelton, granddaughters Lorelai and Autumn Anderson, and sister Linda Thompson.
